butyl tape under gutter or not?

OK so I am putting down new rubber on my roof & I'm trying to figure out where to place the butyl tape when it come to the sides of the rv. When I pulled the old roof off there was butyl between the metal edge & the rv. Then the rubber was glued over it & then the trim was screwed thru it.
The reason I ask is because the guy said to put butyl between the trim & the rubber not the metal & the rv. Which is not the way it came off.
  • OK thanks.

So Doug this rv had butyl tape between the metal cap & fiberglass side but no tape between the metal cap & epdm rubber or the epdm rubber & trim/gutter rail.

So I was going back the same way but a guy said I need to put butyl tape between the trim/gutter rail & the epdm rubber. But that's not the way it came off.
  • The only reason to install Butyl under the EPDM rubber and that metal is to prevent possible rubbing and tearing from the metal edge. I have done hundreds of RV roofs over 36 years and have never installed butyl under Rubber or any other roof covering. Always on top the Rubber and the appliance. It will not hurt to do it the original way, but a waste of money on the Butyl. Doug
  • I would duplicate what the mcg did. Of course you could forego the tape and use Dicor only in that position
