Buying a Class A coach in Texas
I plan to buy a coach from a private party (not a dealer) in Texas. I plan to fly there in a couple of weeks and drive it home to West Virginia.
I will need some sort of temporary tag good for a few days to drive it home, where I will obtain a West Virginia title and registration.
I called the Texas DMV to see what I needed to do to get a temporary tag. They referred me to the tax office in the county where the current owner lives.
My conversation with the county tax office does not inspire confidence. I got a series of different answers as the person to whom I was speaking realized that my circumstances did not fit each answer that she just gave.
I’ve previously bought vehicles from private parties in other than my home state, and what I am hearing from the county tax office is very different from my own past experience in other states. And some of what I was told by the tax office just doesn’t make sense based on my past experience.
If anyone has recently purchased a Class A coach from a private party in Texas and driven it to another state to title and register, please tell me what your experience was in getting a temporary permit in Texas, including what all documentation you needed to show at the tax office.
