I bought mine from a private party in TX and drove it back to AR. All I did was call my insurance agent, gave him the VIN # and he sent me an insurance certificate. When I bought the coach I got a bill of sale and headed back to AR. I was told that the bill of sale and insurance certificate was all that was required and that I had 10 days to register it in my home state. . . .
What exactly did the “insurance certificate” consist of? Did you have to pay for adding the coach to your policy ahead of traveling to Texas to inspect it and make the final decision to buy? (I'm 1300 miles from the current owner.)
I was told by the tax office that I needed the declarations page from my policy, showing the coach VIN and my name as the policy holder and as evidence that the limits on my policy meet the minimum limits required in Texas. In my experience living in Ohio and West Virginia, whenever I’ve bought a new vehicle it was immediately covered on my current policy for a few days with no action on my part, even though I called my agent immediately upon purchase. In either state, I’ve had to pay use tax before getting a title. In Ohio, I had to sign a sheet certifying that I had insurance before I could register a vehicle. In WV, I have to show a WV Insurance Certificate when registering. Neither asks for dec sheet, as I was told I needed in Texas.
Did you get a temporary tag for the drive back to AR? Did you go to the county tax office in Texas to get it?
If you got some sort of temporary/transit tag, do you remember what it was called? How many days was it good for? It seems Texas has an abundance of types of permits/tags for different kinds of vehicles.
I have found information on the Texas DMV web site for various kinds of “transit permits,” but none seem to be for people like me who travel to Texas from another state to buy a motorhome.
