buying used class a diesel pusher

My wife and I are contemplating buying a 38 foot, 2000 Safari Cheetah. The coach has been sitting for 4 years. Is anyone familiar with this unit? What maintenance is required to make a coach roadworthy after sitting for 4 years? It has approximately 46000 miles on it. It seems that Safari and Monaco motorhomes are considerably cheaper than other similar makes. does anyone know why this is.

Thanks for your help Roadtripin

  • A 2000 Cheetah was still being built by SMC - Safari Motor Coach -and I believe it was still a Magnum chassis. It was after the Safari/Beaver merge, so there were some pretty good, long-time-in-the-business craftsmen working at the combined company at that time. Some say the quality suffered under Monaco, but the 2000 you're looking at was built before the buyout.

Safari wise, you need to research the Velvet Ride suspension and the issues with ride height and after-market fixes. You didn't say what the drive train was, but if it's the CAT/Allison combination, it's a great combination at 300 or 330 hp.

IMO, Safari was a well built coach and holds up well over the years, Our 96 Sahara with 138,000 miles just got back from a 6 month 6000 mile winter tour and is actually better than when we left. No mechanical issues at all. The coach was well maintained by the original owner, and that's something worth looking for specifically. It was kept inside by the first owner, so I had a few roof leaks to fix.

And that's what I would be most concerned about. If there are roof or window leaks that can start a cascade of issues that would go from visually annoying to major repair.
  • Welcome to the forum.
As mentioned, tires. RV tires usually age out before they wear out.
Use the tires, filters, hoses, fluid replacement, etc. for price negotiation.

Definitely have a diesel mechanic check it out.

And check for leaks. A small leak can do a lot of damage if not repaired.
  • algae treatment in the fuel tank
    replace all filters,
    possibly replace all batteries
the normal flush and sanitize the water system
  • Also drain and flush the antifreeze.

Remember whatever suggestions you get, they also need to be done to the generator. You'll also need starting and house batteries.
