Buying/shopping advice

Having sold out travel trailer last year to buy a house I am ready to go camping. I'm set on getting an RV this time, since it suits our travel style better. We still have the tow vehicle, but I am currently thinking we can sell it and put that money into an RV.

My desire is to get a small used class C. I want small because it is easier to get into campgrounds. I don't want something giant and unwieldy. I am thinking 22-26' (dream RV is a Lazy Daze 26.5 mid bath). We have 4 kids ages 5-12, so I would like to have enough room that we can all sleep in the RV if we have some inclement weather, but I'd rather kick them out to sleep in tents for the most part.

If we sell the tow vehicle I would have about $20k to spend. If not I'd have about $10k.

So that being said - I'm looking for models and years to consider. I've been trolling CL for months and the asking prices seem to vary widely. I am having a tough time figuring out how to shop, since I would like to go private party if at all possible.

  • Something to consider is how many seats with seat belts will what you buy have. I See you are in Nevada. How well will your children do in the heat being in the tents? Our daughter has a 33 ft Leprechaun 371sa and has no problem getting in or out of campgrounds.
  • Expand your search, had a friend go from SE of tucson to lost wages to look at an rv that turned out to be junk, but here are just a couple that might be what you are looking for and really not that far away to spend a weekend on? These are just class C's there were a couple smaller class a's there also.

  • I've since moved to Reno, so I don't have to deal with the LA market, thankfully. I'm not finding anything more exciting here, unfortunately. Maybe I should fly to Florida and buy an RV! That sounds like an adventure.

Most of the RV's I've found that interest me are asking far above what NADA says. Of course that could be someone just asking way too much, but I'm also curious to know of other's experiences with NADA. Have you found their pricing to be accurate?

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a look at the link.
  • Another SoCal ex-rental owner. SoCal is a tough place to find a decently priced and used RV. Everybody wants one here in SoCal. Blame it on the weather and the wealth of places to experience in this wonderful and majestic state of ours. Forgive my hyperbole as I am currently watching the Ken Burns National Park program and also going to Yosemite this weekend, LOL. It seems most selling are here in sunny SoCal are under water or selling units that are used up. Unlike, perhaps in Florida, where you can get a deal from a snow bird.

I also spent months and months looking at over priced and or used up private seller units in the Los Angeles area then finally decided to take a look at the rental market. Minimally, going to places like El Monte and Cruise America will give you a base line for what is possible when you are ready instead of when you get lucky and that gem falls in your lap one day tomorrow or three years from now.

Good luck! Do spend some time reading that thread IAMICHABOD linked to. It was integral in my purchase decision.
  • A good place to start in knowing the price range of what you are looking at try NADA

If you are looking for a good used RV with maintenance records and with in an affordable price range you might look at the Ex Rental market as I did when all I could find was ones that were used up or not taken care of.

Read the Thread in my signature about buying a rental, to find out more if you are interested.
