Many times RVers have pulled into a campground arrainged for more than one night then gotten settled in and their phone rings. FAMILY EMERGENCY, and at 7am next day they are off down the road to deal with the emergency... Sort of happened to the camper I see when I look out the entry door window here yesterday, only they did not leave the CG (I drove him, He paid for the gas).
So I can understand the office,, And they gave you a nicer site.
When I'm leaving only to return at the very least I leave a step (2-step) ladder (Rubbermaid or imitator) with a sign on it "SITE OCCUPIED"
The sign was made with Avery Label Wizard (Limited) and my printer, then tape/glued to a piece of corrugated paper (What many improperly call cardboard) (There is also a real cardboard) . And as a result I have yet to have a problem... Finally, after 3 years only the Motor home, I snagged a deal on a towed I could afford. (YIPPIE) so I don't have that issue any more.
