Yes, it would have been ideal if you had left something on that site when you left or told the office, however, it shouldn't be necessary.
The office has a record of what sites are sold. How did they even know you were gone? Did they go to look at the site before re-assigning it? I don't think so.
My thoughts exactly... The woman who rented it out again, you could tell she was far from stupid... This is why I think there was more to the story..
