I was stationed at Fort Belvoir from 1985 to 1988, and then lived in Manassas, VA for another year after that before moving back to the mid-west. I was a chaplain assistant and worked out of the main post chapel. Both our children were born at DeWitt Army Hospital.
Fast forward to 1999. My wife worked for a company that merged with another company and the corporate headquarters was in Reston, VA. We took a trip back to the DC area to show the kids where they were born and where we lived. We also lived in Woodbridge for a year too, and on post housing, Lewis Heights and later Peterson Loop.
So we ended up staying at the Fairfax County campground very near Reston. It's a nice campground and has a water park also. This was the closest campground we could find near Fort Belvoir when we went back in 1999. We've never been back since then.
The Fairfax County Parks web site will have more information and phone numbers. Good luck.
