I just got back yesterday from camping in San Diego. We spent 3 days at Santee Lakes. We had sight 32. It was a huge site. It was our first time staying at Santee Lakes. I am not sure what you are referring to about a bear to get to. It is extremely easy. It is not downtown or near the beach, but there is plenty of space to get in and out of the park. The park is clean and quiet. We will be staying there again.
I also stayed 2 nights at Campland. I had been to Campland when I was a kid a few times. It was better and worse than I remember. Cleaner for sure, and more things for the kids to do (like a small skateboard park). I could hear the freeway a lot more than I remember though. It wasn't like it was close loud, but the low hum when I was sleeping bothered me a little. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't horrible, but I could have done without it. We rode our bikes over past Mission BaY RV resort. It is a little closer to the freeway, so I don't think I could stay there. It's really only a few thousand feet from Campland. It looked a little better between sites as there was grass and trees at nearly every site, unlike Campland which has either nothing or dirt/pavement between sites at best. At Campland, I stayed in site L03.
I will be staying at Silver Strand State Beach in late June and would be able to give a review of that campground then.
