Can a portable generator be hooked up as a permanent one?

Thanks, everyone for your input. I won't be mounting it inside the compartment. I'll just keep moving it in and out for now. But I do need some ideas on how to secure it so it doesn't walk away so how do you keep it out in the air for running but safe from theft?
