Can't fill gas tank in CA... nozzle won't fit into opening.

I tried getting the gas nozzle inserted into the filler tube, and it won't fit. It seems that the nozzle with vent recovery system will not pivot forward enough to allow the nozzle to fit into the lower opening. I tried 5 gas stations (Shell/Texaco/Texaco/Independent) in Eureka/Arcata, CA until I could finally get one to fit (Circle K/76). The upper fiberglass trim around the door for the fuel tube is part of the problem.

In 2 of the gas stations I could hold the vent recovery cuff up and lightly press the handle to allow a minimal amount of fuel into the tank. It took several minutes for 5 gallons. In 2 gas stations I could not even get that far.

I have seen an adapter here on RV.Net that was made from a oil can spout, but can not seem to find it now by searching. Some motorcycles apparently have a similar problem.

Any thoughts.

  • Come on guys.. stop the California bashing. It's a great state (well except for a lot of the Southern half). I have also had issues with nozzle fit in WA and AZ. W/I improperly designed the fuel fill opening, and CA did not allow for it's use. W/I has apparently not offered any help with resolving this?

As per the link I posted above, some options include moving the inlet outboard and tilting slightly downward with shims. I'll try that first so that I don't have to carry another thing for a single use. If that doesn't work, I'll modify an oil can spout to extend the nozzle, and add some method of compressing the rubber cuff without spending $20 for a McCuff.

Their is no unresolved issue between W/I and CARB. You play by CARB rules in CAlifornia.

  • Never heard of such a problem where the nozzle didn't fit and I have traveled all around the country. How big is the hole on the filler tube on your coach?
