Car Dolley Towing

I am towing my car for the first time this season. When I put it on the dolley I have a 5-1/2" clearance from the bottom of the spoiler to the ground. I measured a few speed bumps at the park I'm at currently and the clearance seems enough. Any comments?
  • I can't find a name on it. It has 15" tires and the height of where the car tires sit is 14" off the ground. I have photos of it but not sure how to attach it to this reply.
  • Wilson,

They sell a hitch entender that is shaped like and "h". It locks into the receiver on your M/H just like your ball does. It has 2 places to slide your ball bar into and lick into place with the big slide pin.

That "h" can be used to raise or lower the tow ball level. I put mine on to lower the ball, this raised the rear end of the dolly by about 6". That also lowered the rear of my car down to about a 5 1/2" clearance. Drove 3,000 miles without Toyota dragging the back bumper.

In your case, you can reverse the "h" and slide it in the receiver to raise the ball on your hitch. Raising the ball will lower the area your front tires are tied down to a couple of inches. Like a kids teeder todder works. That will raise the ass end of your car a couple more inches off the ground.
  • I've been pulling my Pontiac Vibe (same body as Matrix) for 51,000 miles on a Demco KarKaddy SS and never had a clearance problem. Based on the OP's other posts he has a BMW toad but can't find what dolly he is using. It would be nice to know as someone else may have the same configuration.

Savannah, what kind of clearance did you have towing the Toyota?

With the Toyota sitting in the driveway, all four tires on ground I have 10 1/2" clearance. When on the dolly...the right way...The rear end of the Toyota has an 8 1/4" clearance on level ground.
  • No, when I get the car loaded the clearance from the spoiler to the road is 5-1/2". It loads fine. I was thinking if the clearance is too low I could let some air out of the tires that are on the dolley but than worried that when I tighten it all down I could be harming the rubber on the tires. Does that make sense?
  • I have a Toyota Matrix toad. It has low bumpers. I got SUPTID and added a extension on my M/H hitch that allowed me to lower the ball about 6". BIG MISTAKE. Got the Toyota on the master tow dolly just fine. taking it off at the campground was a different story. I left my front bumper cover on the dolly as it ripped off dragging down the ramp.

By lowering the M/H hitch by 6" it raised the back end of the dolly by those 6" and the incline of the ramp was too steep.

Having said that the Toyota rear end also has a low bumper. I never had a problem towing it over speed bumps. I've never dragged the rear of the Toyota on the ground. So far, anyway....
  • If your refering to clearance with the front air dam while loading/unloading, get someone to watch while loading. If I attempt to load on gravel or a soft surface, the ramps will sink a little causing less or no clearance. I carry a few 2X6 boards to put under the front tires to increase the initial clearance when needed.
