Carburetor Faceplate problem

Hi. We are currently rehabbing a 1978 Ford Midas class c rv.
My husband is replacing the carburetor. He is using the correct carburetor for the model and year, special ordered.
He put the space plate on and noticed a small gap showing where it sits on the motor. There is a picture attached. It appears that it is wider than it is supposed to be, whether due to age or some sort of occurrence.
We are wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how to safely fill this gap or whether this is even possible since it will leak gas otherwise.
Thanks.http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=357q51d&s=5

Sorry, I only seem to be able to attach a link from my mac.
  • There is a plate missing, the exhaust gas port does 't go to the carburetor.

What is the Model Year of the Chassis? As noted above, might not be 1978. And, the Engine Size...
We had a 1983 chassis with 460 V8 and that one had a 4-barrel carb. It also had EGR, and it mounted on a plate between Carb and Intake Manifold. The "stack" of parts (bottom to top) was: Manifold, EGR Plate Gasket, EGR Plate, Carb Gasket, Carb.
Any chance some parts have been "deleted?"
  • Take the pictures and your VIN to your local Ford dealer and ask them for the correct base gasket. Don't use the one in the picture.
Wow, looks like the exhaust gases have eaten away some of your manifold. Might consider correcting that.
If you want to know how to fix the section of your intake manifold corroded away, PM me. I have used an unorthodox way of fixing damage like this, but it works.
  • OK, this will help my husband. Let me talk to him tomorrow. The base gasket that came on the old carb fit the same way. Confusing all right. I have a couple of pictures of the entire thing. Let me see if I can get them on here. This computer is really not liking linking things.
  • I used to be a mechanic and my primary job was to rebuild use carburetors in the late 1970s. You definitely have the wrong base gasket. Does the gasket fit the bottom of the carb? If so, you have the wrong carb too.

Just to be certain, since I can't see the whole gasket. You don't possibly have the gasket in the wrong orientation do you?
  • I have no idea if Ford many any changes in the carburetors or manifolds back then but is it possible the cab is a different model year than the motor home, like a 1977 ?
  • It looks as though you have the incorrect base gasket. Do you have the old gasket that you can bring down to the auto parts store and match up?
