Carburetor Rebuild?

My 86 winni, has been giving me problems where it started by it shutting down on me..It lacks fuel to the engine. I've research it a bit and suggestions were dirty fuel filter, old fuel pump, electric pump at the tank.. So far I've changed the fuel filter, the mechanical fuel pump. I could not find an electric one and because it's a 22 footer it may not have one. I know is a fuel issue since i can spray starting fluid into the carb and get it running. I think my carburetor is next to get changed or rebuilt... any suggestions?

  • Do not! I repeat - Do Not buy a rebuilt carb. Instead, have your existing carb rebuilt. Carburetors are very specific to the original configuration and rebuilds are more generic in application. Too much of a crap-shoot to get one that is jetted and configured correctly. Been there - done that - never again. The Q-Jet is also prone to have a warped top horn from Neanderthal mechanics overtightening the top bolts. Causes vacuum leaks and rich running.
Best of luck getting things sorted out.
  • Does carburetor accelerator pump squirt fuel into the carburetor venturi when you pull back on the accelerator rod/cable at the carb?

Rochesters have a fuel bowl float made of composite material that over time absorbs gas and rides lower in the fuel bowl when full failing to shut off the needle valve causing excessive fuel in the carb.

Also there's 2 small plugs in the bottom of the fuel bowl that sometimes leaks fuel into the intake manifold. Usually the symptoms of those problems is engine dieseling after shutting ignition off.

We had an 84 coach with the 454 and the engine kept missing out and finally shut down. Found high voltage had arced through the rotor material grounding out on the steel distributor shaft. Replaced rotor and all worked well again.

I highly recommend crankshop1000's advice to check for a lack of fuel, one step in the process of elimination in finding your problem...

Best of luck and keep us posted...
  • Check for fuel flow while cranking the engine over.Disconnect the fuel line and direct any flow into a container. This will eliminate the delivery system from the cause. No fuel means the problem is from the pump back.Be careful we all know how dangerous gas is.
  • Is this happening when it's hot? Check for vapor lock.

Did you change the fuel filter on the frame rail?
I had the carb on mine rebuilt last year. Out in California you should not have any problem finding a rebuilder. By getting mine rebuilt and the distributor recurveddistributor recurved it made a world of change power wise.

What's this? how do i do it?

There is also a fuel filter on the inlet to the carb. Did you change that one also and did you put it in the right way?

Yes I also changed it and put it the same the previous one.
which is the correct orientation? I can easily check that.

A carburater does not cause the problem. If it starts and runs and then
quits because its starved for fuel the Carb is not the problem
however if it wont start period and by spraying starter fluid in it will start and run at idle it may be a bad accelerater pump in the carb.U need to explain things a little clearer than u have so far
However rebuilding it is quit simple to do
