I've had two pickups with Cummins engines that performed flawlessly for many thousands of miles so I looked for a coach with a Cummins engine. The fact that Cat left the over the highway market was also a consideration.
Having said that, they are both pretty good engine manufacturers and they can have issues unique to the brand or model. The Cummins 8.3 seems to have issues with lift pumps and manifold gaskets. The Cat C7 has the HEUI problem. The bottom line is, properly maintained, they both can provide thousands of miles of reliable service, but you are going to spend a considerable amount of money to fix any serious issue with either brand.
