Having run both, CAT is more expensive initially, Cummins evens it out in maintenence. CPM was the same for bot but the CAT was more economical fuel wise because they develop more torque/CI. After 420,000 miles on a CAT 3406E powered Pete we had 1 failure of a injector. It had no belts and a brushless alternator. We averaged 6.5 mpg from BALT-SEA and 7.3 SEA-BALT hauling average loads of around 60K GVW. Your mileage may vary. My only complaint was the CAT powered Pete had a rumble from air passing through intakes right above and in front of your feet and it got old. The Cummins got the same mileage but had less power on the same run.
