Changing my resident State

We are considering changing our resident State from SD to Oregon and looking for info from Oregon folks. I tried calling all the DMV numbers listed with either a voice mail or a disconnect so talking directly to them seems to be a futile effort. So I'm turning to this knowledgeable forum for info. I've looked into Homebase as a mail forwarding firm. See the thread HERE

1. Can your DL be renewed via Internet?
2. Are there any fees other than licensing fees for your car and/or moho?
3. Since there's no sales tax, is there a luxury tax allocated to your coach?
4. Can your license plates be renewed on line?
5. Are there different classifications/tests/fees associated with driving a 48,000 three axle coach?

Thanks for any and all advice....Dennis

  • In Texas you can renew online one time and then the next you have to go in. Renewals are every 6 years. So basically every 12 years you go in. There are exceptions for the elderly & real young.
  • I believe you will find that no state renews a drivers license over the Internet. The Federal requirement to have a "real" ID that allows one to use it to get on an airplane requires that you appear in person to apply for renewal. They may send the license to you via mail, but must apply in perdon.
  • Yes and yes! I did get DWs license extended altho she doesn't like it that way. (She's a little OCD about rules etc. :)) We still have to make an unscheduled trip up north this year because of the overnight stay thing. A minor inconvenience but necessary. I was thinking Oregon only because we have kids and grandkids in Ca. (not even considered) and spend a lot of time along the West Coast. I do believe the income tax thing is a deal breaker for us tho....Dennis

For license renewals in SD, I think I have read on here or another forum, that wife can get an extension and you can renew up to 6 mo early, therefore, you can make arrangements to do both at the same time.

Have you gotten a quote for Vehicle Insurance based on change of address?

We checked how a different SD address affected rates.....WOW!

  • Thanks for the info so far. We don't mind SD but to renew your DL you MUST stay one night in their State, and your license expires on your B'day. Since mine is much later than DWs this would mean two trips to SD just to renew. Kind of a pain but it is what it is. They will allow me to renew on-line but the one night receipt is a must. So I'm looking at options. Aztortuga, thanks for the income tax info, for some reason I was thinking Oregon didn't have an income tax. Guess I was mistaking that for the sales tax....Dennis

It behooves you to have your drivers license the same as your vehicle registration. Raises RED FLAGS immediately with Law Enforcement if not...

  • What will you use for an address? I believe you're full-timers.

Oops... I just checked the full-timing site and you're thinking of Home Base forwarding service in Tillamook.

    Re Oregon as residence change

    1. Don't believe you can renew drivers license via internet.

    2. No extra fees on license plates. They do charge a higher fee for motor homes, but I think it is based on length. My 40 footer is around $350 for two years. Been the same for for 6 years.

    3. No luxury tax on motor home.

    4. You can renew the license plates via internet. Renewal will be sent to you home residence.

    5. No special requirement for a drivers license and motor homes.

    6. No sales tax, BUT --- 9% -- income tax--This will vary somewhat depending on income, but higher than many other states.

This will give you a start in gathering information
