I believe this is totally a preference thing... Some people say it's messy, well if you take your time and know what you are doing it shouldn't be THAT messy. Others say they are too old/tired/lazy to do it themselves, which is fine too.
I like to do it myself because I know its done right, however, if I mess up I can't go blaming anyone other than myself ;)
