James Island has moved to top Park list, will probably continue south to Savannah. Any suggestions for RV Park near Savannah ?
We just left there, having spent four days at the Red Gate RV park. This place does everything it needs to. It's well run, and is easily accessible for any size rig. The layout is interesting. Basically a giant field with sites around the perimeter. They are a mix of back in and pull through, and the entire area is flat, mostly grass covered and has a base of rock hard sand. It's right on the interstate heading into downtown, and at least one of the tour trolleys will pick you up at your site. The only downside we found was that it's noisy. There are major roads on two sides and a well used railroad on another. If you have the time, don't miss Sweet potatoes, a great restaurant in the south end of town. Absolutely the best southern cooking we ever had, for less than half of what the bill would be in the historic district. have fun, it's a great city. - DewLessExplorerJames Island has moved to top Park list, will probably continue south to Savannah. - Dale_TravelingExplorer IIMany of the downtown or old town Charleston streets predate the late unpleasantness (Civil War). Laid out for horse and buggy much like some areas of Philadelphia, Annapolis and Boston. Best explored on foot or horse drawn carriage.
James Island is on my short list of places when we head that direction again. Full hook ups and other services at a pretty good price. Lots of bike and walking trails, huge dog park, minutes from the city and such. - Doug156ExplorerAs was stated, stay at the James island county park. It's a great campground and they have a shuttle which runs to the market area. There is no way you can get a 37' motorhome down there
- MikeHowardExplorerTrue Story....I wanted to take my MH to watch the St. Patricks Day parade in Savannah and use it for the party. Savannah is set up just like Charleston. BIG MISTAKE. Oh, I got it there and parked on the street at 4:00 AM. Left it overnight and went back the next morning to pick it up. Normal day, normal traffic. Tried to turn a tight corner in traffic and OOOOPS, side of coach made love with a telephone pole. #18K damage.
- DewLessExplorerWell now, guess I will be rethinking this idea. Thanks to all for advice. 10forty2 & wildtoad I will check out these campgrounds. Shuttle sounds good. Enterprise sounds like good idea also, wondering where to find Enterprise service, airport ?
- 10forty2ExplorerJust got back from Charleston about 3 weeks ago. Love the place, but don't even consider driving an RV through downtown. The streets were designed for horse and buggy....not a 36' motorhome. We stayed at the Oak Plantation campground on Savannah Highway. It's about 10 miles south of downtown. Very nice campground. We rented a car from Enterprise since we don't haul a toad.

Its even hard to find parking spot with a car. Listen to all the other suggestions and not come in a RV.
Good Advice - wlstroudExplorerDowntown Charleston SC and Savannah Ga streets are fender-rubbers in width. As has been stated: don't try it with an RV! Also lots of low hanging tree limbs in some areas.
