It is probably not that they can't read, but there is nothing to read.
Older computers don't have memory. Once the light is off, you will not find anything.
Our 10 years old Mercedes on other hand can be overwhelming. When I scan it - found over 30 old codes, including bad seat sensor and tank code when PO forgot to put cap 8 years ago.
