As a former retail cashier, I didn't take a customer's cash unless I could put it in the register. Why? Because it was too easy for someone to accuse me of trying to steal the cash. I pissed off some customers because of it, but I didn't have to try to defend my actions later on.
Now, I worked for a big company where not following procedures could get you fired (especially if the manager was looking for excuses to fire full-time employees receiving benefits). But, perhaps some consideration for the new staff who is just trying to figure out how to do his/her job. While it might have been a slight inconvenience for you - it could mean her rent for her.
