Laundry keys, pet deposits, whatever, are minor details. They could have easily given you a written receipt or a post it with a paid stamp on it and taken care of it later. Same thing with the phone. People don't know how to be efficient and are not customer service minded.
Worst is when they say, "you'll have to wait or come back, our system is down". Nothing is 100%, be prepared to go manual.
It should be, "get the customer in and out as fast as possible".
