This has been a great thread to read. Although I've been in the OP's position many times and totally agree with his feelings, some of the responses have been fun to read. Every time I get anxious about how things may be going at the register I try to calm down, sometimes engage in small talk, etc. If you're in unfamiliar territory it really does present a good opportunity to connect with someone who might give you some great tips or insight about the area.
