Chicago to Upper state New York and beyond questions....

First major length trip after retirement this September. Need suggestions on traveling from the Chicago land area to upper state New York and possibly Eastward than back home thru the civil war battle...

On my trip earlier this month I was on Hwy 17, west of Wawa and saw 2 moose grazing by the side of the road and 1 bear ran across in front of me. You won't get there on your trip but they do exist.
