Chicago to Upper state New York and beyond questions....

First major length trip after retirement this September. Need suggestions on traveling from the Chicago land area to upper state New York and possibly Eastward than back home thru the civil war battle...

Thanks everyone!!! Getting our Passports renewed now. We have to make sure we take our lab's current vaccination tags with (need anything else for a pet?).
We might head farther East towards Maine and slowly come back down.
I'll check into the IPass as I'll need both for my RV and toad.
