Very well written article with a wealth of information. I'm on my third coach and have considered diesel over and over. I just can't get past the up front cost and maintenance one must consider when buying the diesel. I just purchased a 2006 Fleetwood Flair 34F, triple slides on a Ford F53 chassis with the newer trany. We pull a 05' Saturn Vue with no difficulty. I was very hesitant to use the "Tow-Haul" mode but once I hit the Blue Ridge Mtns I realized just how good that trany worked. I have never felt so comfortable descending long grades or making the long pulls as I have in this coach. I never over heated the brakes and on many climes I went around other RV's and many trucks. I think Ford got it right on this combo. The V10 is 365hp and I averaged 7mpg, not good but I expected worse. I totally agree on issue of distance traveled per the tank load of fuel. You have to pay some place but I would like to carry 100 gals. and have more range. We are presently on a two month tour from Fla. to the mid west the on to New England before returning to Fla. After that I will have a more acurate accounting of just how good this coach is and how well it preformed. I have friends who own Workhorse power trains and they swear buy them, but they have never owned a Ford powered coach. To clarify "I'm not a Ford guy" actually I'm a MoPar guy.
