Class A vs 5th wheel

I was reading a post on the 5th wheel forum about class a owners that switched to a 5th wheel and how happy they are that they switched. Of course on the 5th wheel page I would expect to hear that. The wife and I occassionaly discuss the possiblity of switching to a class a. Was hoping to get some feedback from class a owners that previously owned a 5er and are pleased that they changed and why. Thanks

  • We went from a 2010 35' bath and half bunkhouse fifth wheel to a 2013 35' Class A gas, bath and a half MH. The first time we pulled into a campground during a major downpour was all the positive reinforcement we needed to know we made the right decision. As I sat in the dry drivers seat lowering the levelers and powering up the generator to run the a/c, etc, I thought it couldn't get better. But it did get better the next day when we needed a bathroom break in another downpour on an Interstate. We figured that since we were already stopped we just sat down and had a nice lunch. Plenty of room to move about the kitchen and dinette with slides in.
No snobbery here just two people who enjoy RVing their way. No right or wrong answers.
  • I agree to all of above.

Fifth wheel means one motor to maintain and insure......THAT was a biggie for us. DH did NOT like driving the MH.....BUT, I know some people have absolutely no problem with it. He can back the 5er in a lot better than the MH!!! (go figure, I can't figure out why).

I personally like our 5er.....MORE windows than in the MH..... yes, you have the front window, but in our MH, you couldn't look out the window unless you got up. Just different strokes for different folks.
  • Morning,

Mamma bear and I have been class A owners for 20 years and just started doing the fifth wheel thing. Each will have its advantages and disadvantages and you will be the only one to be able to know whats right for you.

Our last Class A was a DP, 38ft entry level and ran like a champ and had no issues. Things we noticed.

    1) Our 33 foot fifth wheel has more interior room and less storage room than the DP

    2) Set up was easier in RV compared to Fifth wheel. Maybe its due to years a practice but jurys still out on that one.

    3) Fifth wheel cheaper insurance.

    4) Ease of upgrading goes to Fifth wheel.

    5) Driving in wind goes to fifth wheel. What used to have me white knuckling in class A I do not even know its happening in fifth wheel.

    6) The eating, sandwich restroom thing.. Advantage Class A ( miss this the most )

    7) Gas mileage is a wash. 10 on truck pulling 15 not. RV was 8 with a 30mpg toad.

    8) Maint goes to Fifth wheel and truck. One vehicile compared to 2

If I had unlimited money it would be DP quad slide, 10k hitch toad car and toys such as ATV etc in back of toad. Pay whatever is needed to have it serviced and worry about nothing but driving, and stay in five star hotel while its being fixed or serviced.

But money is not unlimited and we are going fulltiming in a fifth wheel in 479 days. Will we ever go back to a Class A maybe, but we need to be sure. Going the most cost effective route for now, and always leaving the door open...
