Class C Advice

Hi All,

A bit open-ended here but here's the advice/direction I am looking for. We currently own a 30 ft. travel trailer. We are thinking about moving to a Class C (3 kids so sleeping capacity is a priority). I am looking for some advice on quality lines and manufacturers, motor packages (budget most likely limits us to a gas motor) and ability to tow a small SUV, etc.

Many thanks in advance for your opinions and direction!

Doug

  • IMHO Four Winds E450, V-10.

    Important FYI:
If you are considering slides make sure ALL the slides are put in BEFORE you purchase a MH with slides.

Many models when the slides are pulled in you can NOT access the bedroom, bathroom, fridge, sink, etc.

Having a full family on board you want to be able to access ALL these places within the MH while you are traveling.

If you are looking at new the dealership will have all the slides deployed. If you ask to see it with the slides pulled in the salesman will most likely tell you there is no battery on board so he can't pull them in. Ya right, they don't want you to see all what they block inside. :R

MAKE the guy put a battery in so you can see all what is NOT available to your access inside the RV when the slides are pulled in. And that goes for buying used from a private party too! :W

Good luck finding just the right MH for your family. :C
  • couple of years ago, jayco had bunk beds on 1 side for kids. Might want to try and find one of them. Most c's have ford v10 for motivation. Check latest Motorhome mag for more info.
  • thor freedom elite 29 fe sleep 6 , the best gas mileage is 8.44 and it has a 8000 lbs tow hitch it has 2 slide one in the bed room and the living room with 3 three tv 2 inside and one outside with a small kitchen on the outside price between 69 to 70
  • I agree with Jeff; some clue as to the budget would be most helpful. Along with that, are you looking at new or used motorhomes?

Especially if used, a good deal of what you're likely to be looking at will be based on the Ford E series chassis and probably have the V10 engine. It's a decent enough chassis, if somewhat dated in suspension and overall design--generally quite reliable and not terrible to work on and with good support for parts and aftermarket bits (as ford sold zillions of E series vans and chassis). Tow ratings vary somewhat with the RV maker and what hitch they install and how they install it, but typically max out at 5000 pounds, 7500 pounds for the newer E450's. Tongue weight is frequently more limited, which is not a particular concern for towing four down or with a tow dolly since the weight is pretty much fully self-supported.

Personally, for shopping used, I'd pay a little attention to the manufacturer and more attention to the quality of maintenance the previous owner(s) have used.

Get a Winnebago on a Ford chassis.
