As far as sales folks go, I actually had a good experience with one of the fellas at the local CW. He was honest and up front and not at all begging for a sale.

Thanks for being a sincere sales rep. I didn't mean to say that all sales reps lack product knowledge or are not trustworthy.

Corporate sales people really are a different breed though. They build longer term relationships with their clients and I HAVE relied on sales expertise for certain technical products when I was a worker bee.

However, in my experience, a consumer product is represented differently than a corporate one, especially certain large ticket items; homes, cars, appliances, contractors, etc. You have to know what you are looking for and what to expect from a product and what to look out for because the sellers are typically not going to do that for you.

Just like when buying a house, you have to get it in writing if you think the pool equipment or whatever is included. Better not to take anyone's word for it, if it is not in the contract you have no right to expect it to be there.

Since it is just as difficult for the average consumer to tell if the sales person they are talking to is trustworthy or knowledgeable, it pays not to be an "average" or "clueless" consumer. Know what you are buying and why. I tried shopping around for an RV before I did enough research and I was told several things that were not fully "lies" but I thought were misleading and the prices quoted were way out of market value. I guess newbie was written all over my face! So I found it a poor way to gather information.

Perhaps I could have spent time shopping for a salesperson, but I was shopping for an RV. Therefore I went elsewhere to gain enough background to make a decision on this major purchase. That way also, I didn't have to blame my misfortune on someone else. :)

Ladies and gentleman, I happen to sell equipment for a living so when I read these accusations to never believe a salesman or saleswoman it makes me wonder why a person would say that. It is a consumers responsibility to do some homework before you go shopping because you will become very confused with all of the information being presented if you do not. The equipment I sell is very high dollar and it is my responsibility to never lie to a customer and have some idea of what I am talking about. It is always better to have the option to talk with a manufacturers representative about high dollar purchases especially an RV. These people are trained on that product and not additional other brands of equipment. They typically can answer more complex questions than the average sales person. I welcome the opportunities to travel and work with any of my manufacturers reps since I have about 20 manufacturers to represent, as with most RV sales people. There are too many complex systems built into your motorized home on wheels for the average consumer to have a complete understanding. You have the chassis with all of the wiring and electrical systems then the drive train, the the 120 volt house electrical system, the water heater, the refrigerator, lighting, leveling systems, TV's, stereos, the furnace, air conditioner, the sanitary systems, then there is the construction of the living quarters and on and on.

Ask yourself before you start shopping, how skilled are you at understanding, diagnosing, and/or repairing any of those systems on you permanent residence, then give less of an assumption about your skills when it comes to ownership of a house that you will actually be driving down the road and possibly running into someone else.

Our RV doesn't have the walk around bed or levelers and of the two I think levelers would be our preference. One less thing to fuss over when arriving at camp.
You can even have fun in a leaky RV, just know that it won't last long if the leaking continues. Lots of folks have loved rubber roofed RV's too.
I don't put a lot of faith in ANY sales people, I'm always on the lookout for info but better to get it from research on this forum and other websites and books than to ask for it from someone who will tell you anything to make a sale. One of the best ways to learn about RVs is to get one and learn as you go. I know a ton more now than I did 5 years ago when we bought ours and hope to learn more (although not through having things break down!) Hit the road, have fun.

Caveat emptor. All companies will play to the assumptions of customers. Make a list and check each rig for those features in which you're interested.

No matter what the rigs is, if not properly checked and maintained against leaks a fiberglass roof won't matter. That being said, they are 100 times better than my EPDM pool liner.
