If you absolutely must have a diesel, a 5000 pound towing, and the rig at least 27' long, you'll be looking at either a Super C or an A motor home. This because Mercedes does not permit frame extensions or changes in wheel base for the Sprinter. Plan on a rig over 30 feet long.
Whatever you do, don't buy a newer E350/E450 with the 6.0L diesel. That engine is nothing but trouble according to my friend who is a mechanic for Ford. He says that is one reason why the engine is no longer available. It is an engine that should have never been.
For the record, our rig and Jeep in-tow shown in my signature, is 24' long and equipped with the 6.8L-V10 engine. We average 9.5 mpg towing the Liberty. If we never hit mountains & canyons, I could add another mpg. If we stayed under 60 mph, I could add one more mpg again.
It is still poor fuel economy no matter how I look at it. But we average 5000 miles a year so a diesel wouldn't be saving us a pile of cash given our the miles driven. Also consider that having a tow vehicle helps to bring down the over-all combined fuel economy between the two vehicles, covering the entire trip .
