Class C "Tow Mode"?????

We upgraded from a TT to a Class C Fleetwood Jamboree. We just installed the tow bar, etc so we can flat tow our Jeep Wrangler. My question is, when we are towing our Jeep behind our Class C, do I put the Class C into "Tow Mode"? My booklet that came with the motorhome just says "consider putting in tow mode".

It supposedly helps a bit when accelerating, but I don't notice much of a difference.

  • I have vacationed in motorhomes for over 40 years, from a 454, a Ford V10 and a Workhorse 8.1 gas, to my current diesel, I have never used the tow mode.
I'm not an expert or a mechanic, just saying what I do.

Our MOHO is that heavy too, so IF we had T/H I'd probably use it a goodly amount of the time. We have 4R100, so the "T/H Button" is "O/D Off" and the transmission reverts to being a three-speed. That's pretty drastic, so it stays in O/D most of the time.

I've driven an F350 V10 with heavy BigFoot Truck Camper, and a 30-ft Class C V10, both with Tow/Haul. It was very nice most of the time. The only time I found it a little annoying was then it chipped in with engine-braking downshifts when I didn't think it needed to do it.

    Transmission's a winner.

So that's what you should do !! :B

It just changes the shift points a bit.
It shifts up later and down sooner.

IF it doesn't sound like the engine is straining right after an upshift, then you probably don't need it. But pulling that much weight I think you will find it useful, both for acceleration and for additional engine braking even on flat land.
  • It will help if you like to accelerate more quickly, as tow mode holds lower gears to a higher RPM for any pedal position short of floored. Tow mode also manages engine braking with a more aggressive program including earlier downshifts.
  • only time I use is when going from stop on steep terrain, or sometimes going downhill to aid the trans for engine braking. Tow haul has had many debates on this and other board sites. Kinda up to you so you will need to play with it to see what it does. Some swear by it and claim they never move without it being on! like I said I use it occasionally in the rv and with the truck when towing.
  • 6 years towing and I have never used it. But then again I don't RV west of the Mississippi! :C
