cleaning dp radiator

I have a 2006 Coachmen Cross country. What and how do you guys clean the rear radiators in your pushers? We are taking a trip to Grand Canyon at the end of the month and I wanted to clean this before we left. I already changed the oil and filter on the generator and coach and fuel fitlers and air filters on both. Thanks for input.
  • Clean from the back AND the front. Most of the dirt/debris will be on the front of the CAC (Charge Air Cooler).

Access from the bedroom/closet-- inside fan shroud/between fan blades. Use a regular garden hose/nozzle. If grease or oil, use Simple Green, Extreme which will not harm aluminum, as it was designed for cleaning airplanes.

Make sure that the crankcase breather has been extended to behind the intake for the radiator (i.e. behind the fan shroud).
  • B52 degreaser. I have used many but this one is the best of the best for the radiator and many other purposes. Available mostly in the central to northern states.
  • Thanks guys. I know i can find the simple green extreme who sells B52?
  • The job is a messy one, so be prepared. Extending the slobber tube will help a lot in the future.
  • I was told that if I extend the slobber tube, the stuff will go all over the toad. Is there a way to not have this happen?

By far the #1 cause of excess oil from the crankcase breather on any diesel is OVERFILLING THE CRANKCASE with oil.

If, after calibrating the engine oil dipstick so you know you have the proper amount of oil you still have oil coming out, take a 2 quart plastic jug, cut off the top (so the opening is a couple of inches by a couple of inches). Cut a slit about 1" from the tip. Insert the extended crankcase breather hose so it is a couple of inches off the bottom of the jug. Zip tie in place. This will catch any oil, but (VERY IMPORTANT), not limit crankcase breathing.

Sure, you can do this without extending the hose, but you will still get oil vapor and water vapor that will be sucked into the fan/CAC/radiator and allow dirt to collect.
  • I sprayed my toad with oil because of overfilling. Once I put the right amount of oil in, the slobber tube never put one drop on the toad.

The toad is MUCH easier to wash than the radiator and it being dirty will NOT affect the temperature of diesel engine like a dirty radiator.

Can't tell you about B52 but you can buy an aluminum-friendly form of Simple Green at Home Depot. It comes in a gallon and it is a purple color. Simple Green Extreme was hard to find in my area. Put the Simple Green in a cheap garden sprayer and soak the CAC and radiator, let it sit for 15 - 20 minutes then flush with water. If it is really dirty, you may have to repeat. You can add some Dawn dish washing liquid to the Simple Green which also helps cut the grease.
