Colorado LaVeta Pass

Need help......

We are presently in South Fork, Co headed East toward Walsenburg on Hiway 160 to tie into Hiway 25. We have been advised not to go that way due to LaVeta Pass. We have been on some pretty high passes but never over LaVeta Pass.

Has anyone been that way lately and can advise us on the conditions of the pass..... the grade, etc. Is there a reason we should steer clear of this pass and any other conditions. We are driving a 42 ft Monaco pulling a 4-door jeep.

Will appreciate your input.

Thanks.
  • FYI: Colorado state map lists elevations and grades of all highway passes.
  • I left South Fork two weeks ago and went that way (again)as La Veta Pass is easy. I have been RVing over it for years. My Gasser does it at 35-40 mph at 4000 rpm all the way up (and down) in 2nd gear. It is longer than most Colorado passes, but very easy, just be patient. If you go South on I-25, you will go over Raton Pass which is just as easy and much shorter. Be safe and remember, you can go up a pass just about as fast as you wish, but not down the pass, gravity takes over everything and can cause speeds to increase evry fast. Keep it slow and under control and use the same gear going down as you did going up. The engine brake helps keep speeds within your compfort range.
  • Thanks to all.... we're headed that direction right now.

    Thanks again.

Go for it. We ran the old road in a B Model Mack with a 2 stick transmission. It was a rotten road then.

    Arv Rt Grade Rouoghly 3%
Dist to High pt 17 mi fr La Veta, 20 mi fr Fort Garland

Lots of Interstates have 9% grades. It's beautiful.

So my question is ..... did the B model have power steering added?

They were a Bear without it and a load on (I had a couple Dump Trucks we used on site - Only the Young and Strong could drive them all day)

    Like your post.

  • La Veta is one of the easier passes in Colorado. Your rig should be no problem.
