Considering 96 bounder purchase

I am looking at a 1996 Bounder, 36 feet with the Chevy 454. It has 28,000 miles on it. It looks like it is good shape from the pictures I have seen but I won't know for sure until I look at it in person. I read the thread/post about buying a class a and it was very helpful but I would like to hear from anyone who has any experience with older Bounders. Can anyone tell me about the construction of this model? Is it aluminum framed or wood? Any ideas on mileage with this size and the 454 chevy? We currently own a 5th wheel and have no experience with motorhomes. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Chuck
  • Thanks for the input. I looked at the rig in person and it was not what I am looking for. The floorplan and storage where great but it was not in the condition I had hoped. Looked a little rougher than I expected with the lower miles.
    Thanks,
    Chuck
  • the rubber roof will be 17 years old. I think mine of that vintage was wooden framed. the chevy 454 had an overheating problem, my bounder required me to mount an additional 12 volt fan up front to keep it cool enough. does it still have the air bags in the front coil springs? do they still hold air?

  • We had a 95 Bounder 34J for about 12 years so I know some of the quirks of that era.

During most of those years we towed an S10 Blazer and the 454 had plenty of power. I was always impressed with the Four wheel disc brakes which were before the Workhorse brake problem years. We consistently got between 7-8 mpg.

Check the chassis basement door frames as they are known to have rust issues. Keep these clean and painted. Latches on the basement doors can also rust and stick. Fairly easy to R&R. American RV near Grand Rapids, Michigan (not that Camping World there) was the only dealer I found that normally carried these latches.

These have dualpane windows which can be an issue. Check the 96 before you buy. There are a number of posts here about dualpain windows.

    Also check the roof.
