Would you be happier if the seller listed it for 50K and then you negotiated the price down to 45K? Smiling while thinking you just saved 5K!
When I want to sell something, I don't play games. I set a firm price, take it or leave it. I set what I think is a reasonable price, usually lower than the going market price to almost assure a sale to someone.
People have been crying for years to having car dealers do that, so they can shop as if going to Walmart for a deal. Carmax or something or the other is saying that, but for the most part, dealers have found that their expertise in wheeling and dealing, creating confusion, giving huge discounts, while making the customer believe that they are getting an unbelievable deal makes them a lot more money.
Taking a trade in is the key to their success, I believe and I for one, always consider a trade for anything and especially if there's no line of cash buyers out there.
What's stupid is when a seller says no and without even asking for the particulars.
Was trying to trade a Corvette once and most all said they weren't taking any trades with no further discussion. Thing is, the Vette was a 1967 L88 and one for a fact, has been sold for almost 4 million dollars. Just kidding of course about the 67 L88 part, but you get my drift.
