converting basement storage doors

has anyone replaced their basement doors which open vertically with gas struts to doors that hinge along the edge instead of the top and thus opening horizontally? Class A Damon coach
  • If one hasn't had to get on their knees and scoot under a door to access the bay then you can't really appreciate what the OP is trying to accomplish. I don't know of any easy or inexpensive way to accomplish the task.

Since the doors and hinges come as a unit it's likely you would have to replace the doors and frames together. Probably can be done with a special order. Then of course there is the paint and/or graphics to match. Seems like a lot of hassle and money for little gain. If the old ones work...My wife always tells me "don't borrow trouble".
  • I've never heard of anyone doing it, but my rig was manufactured with some doors that open vertically and some horizontally. The doors are all the same so it's probably do-able (if that is even a real word), but the problem may be that the lock will be in the wrong place. Typically the lock is opposite the hinges so if you move the hinges the lock will be on the side and the door may not close securely.

  • sounds like a lot of work/trouble to gain what exactly? I can see it on compartments under a slide out but other than that?
