Coolant Flush

This is just a question about a procedure I was told they do, not that I am going to do it but was just wondering if any of the forum members heard of it. I took my Mh to a Big truck center to get a state inspection, I was talking to the service person if they change coolant I also asked did they flush the engine, was told they put Joy dish detergent in and drive the MH for about 15 minutes. Has any one heard of this procedure. Roy

  • Roy,from one Jarhead to another,go to Cummins and get the correct products for what you are doing, then follow Brett's 101 on coolant change.
  • Not a chance in the world would your engine manufacturer recommend that.

I know Caterpillar has a specific cleaner with specific instructions when changing from regular "low silicate for diesel with added SCA" to the OAT-based Caterpillar ELC.

Suspect that Cummins/Fleetguard has a very similar product.
  • I don't know about using Joy, but I've run Dawn dish detergent in plain water for a short time, to clean out oil residue in the water jacket after repairing a blown head gasket. I like Dawn because it rinse out very cleanly, even with cold water.
  • I have decided on the oak coolant, what kind of cleaner do I need to flush my system. I have the regular ES Extended service in it now. Thanks Roy
