Coolant system flush Cummins 350 ISC

I was wondering if anyone here has done their own cooling system flush on their diesel engine? How complicated is it to perform? I was contemplating just taking it over to Cummins and have them do it, but if not too complicated, I wouldn't mind tackling it myself. Mine is a side radiator so everything is easy to get to.

There's currently nothing wrong with my cooling system. Everything is operating (cooling) fine, no leaks and the coolant (Extended Life Coolant - Peak Final Charge) is nice and clean. However, since I don't know when the last time a flush was done (I've only owned this coach for 3-1/2 years), I'd like to have it done as a preventative maintenance measure benchmark. I have changed the coolant filter.

Input?
  • IMO, more important than flushing and replacing coolant is changing the coolant filter on the Cummins schedule. It contains a charge of SCA additive and meters it into the coolant to keep the additives where they must be to prevent cavitation damage and corrosion.

Thanks Don. I've heard mention from a couple of people about using distilled water when flushing. Makes sense.

Dont know if you NEED distilled for the flushing process...but definitely do for the final go around when you INSTALL THE COOLANT ( I hope my know it all sees that) and bring it up to full with water. That load of water is going to be in there quite awhile

If you took it to Cummins...do you think they would use distilled water for the flushing part????.....:)

  • It's an easy job.....just like anything else with a motor home, it's a lot of fluid to deal with. Turn your heater on, get the engine warm and drain. Now here is where some disagreement comes in. If it's dirty it might need two flushes. The first flush you can use water form the hose. Get it warm and drain. The second flush, many recommend using distilled water. Some will use distilled for both flushes, but in your case....since it's clean....you could probably get away with one flush.

I used Final Charge when I flushed mine. You can by Final Charge in the concentrate or 50/50. If you use the concentrate, you mix it 50/50 with distilled water. When I did mine, I put in two gallons of concentrate and then the rest was 50/50. The two gallons of concentrate was added to mix with the water caught in the engine and plumbing.

I had a bedroom heater 12' hose break just outside Yuma on I-10 last March and am now going to have all the heater hoses replaced front to back in the Dutch Star. I will have Cummins replace the coolant at the same time since I now have 2 different types of coolant in the rad. You might have all your hoses checked or replaced at the same time you do a flush. A roadside breakdown is not fun. I had 2 of them this last winter on my 12 year old MH!!!

As a matter of fact I just last week received an entire set of spare hoses for the engine coolant system that I ordered from Spartan.

I dont have "any" radiator hoses in my coach... All steel tubing with "hose" preformed bends and such. All straight lengths are inline steel tubing.

If you were closer I'd be happy to recycle (into one of my machines) what you drain out. In fact I had a water pump go out today so I could use it ASAP. The key for me was "is nice and clean" but I would get a test strip to check the SC level.
  • The final charge is good for something like 600k miles before you need to even check it
