coolant level

I have a 1997 Monaco dynasty with 8.3 cummins diesel. I was wondering where the coolant level should be in the reservoir. There are no marks on the tank as far as fill levels . I know there is a level indicator inside the tank that lights on the dash when low. Not sure how much coolant should be in tank when changing. thanks kb
  • Also, whenever adding coolant, ensure your SCA levels are correct!.....Dennis
  • OP: Do you have a coolant reservoir (non pressurized tank/cap) or a coolant expansion tank? (pressurized tank/cap) I suspect the latter. If when you change/add coolant, as previously mentioned, warm the engine up then add coolant to about 3/4" below the cap. When the engine cools down, make a black mark at the coolant level with a bold sharpie on the tank. That should be your "cold fill" level. Monitor it for changes in level for several weeks to insure there are no leaks. If the coolant level monitor light comes on, and/or the level changes over time, suspect that you have a leak(s) somewhere or a bad/insufficient pressure cap.

  • It is obviously low then. Less than half the tank is full. I will fill and check for leaks when running . thanks
  • Probably about 3/4" below the cap. One way to do it, if your low coolant light isn't coming on, is after you've been driving for a while, park and shut it off. Then go look at how full it is hot and decide if it should need more. If you put too much in, the worst that should happen is it will force it out the overflow.
