Cooler for Motorhome

I know this is off topic of motorhomes but we use a cooler for our canned beverage's in our motorhome. We bought a new 48 qt. Rubbermade cooler last year and it won't keep ice for 24 hours. We are looking at the Coleman Xtreme Coolers. They claim to hold ice for up to five days. Does anyone own and use one? Do they hold ice that long? Or is there a better brand out there? I would be happy with three days. Buying ice everyday gets old real fast.... Thanks

  • Get the 120/12 V reefers you can sit in your basement compartment....regardless of where you are you have a small refrigerator then
  • It's a matter of increasing insulation like keeping a heavy blanket over the ice box, keeping the Ice box closed, using block ice (frozen water jugs) instead of cubes, keeping the ice box in the shade.
I myself carry an auxiliary 4 cu ft elect refrigerator along.
  • Agree Yeti coolers are made to last and keep ice longer 3-4 days
  • Hi,

You can also make some blocks of ice before leaving on a trip. Put some in a 2 quart tupperware container, and let it freeze at least 48 hours before leaving. Might even put some in a zip lock baggy (so the blocks of ice will not get freezer burn).

Blocks of ice tend to stay cooler longer. Yes you will need a better insulated cooler too. Also if you are putting in warm soda's to the ice, you will use a lot of ice to cool the items. Say there is 1 gallon of soda, that is 8 pounds, and if brought from 82F to 32F that is 400 Btu's or enough to melt 1/2 pound of ice.

Cooling the same 8 pounds from 39 to 32F is only 56 Btu's or about 1/20 pound of ice. So refrigerating the items before putting it into the cooler will help a lot.

    Fred.
  • Yeti cooler, expensive but there are none better. Last one you will purchase. Unless it gets stolen.
