- wildtoadExplorer IIWhat Old-Biscuit said. Slow down, brake sooner, downshift when on long downhill runs.
- ArchHoaglandExplorerComing down mountains, like 101 south of you, I never get over 40 mph. I use lower gears and when my rpm gets to 4,000 I mash on the brakes hard for no more than the count of 5.
That particular grade (northbound on 101 south of you several miles) is extremely steep and I came down it a couple months ago at 25mph. It helped that there was a CHP weaving back and forth across the lanes to slow down the traffic.
I don't know of any other way to keep the brakes cooler. - Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIBrake hard to quickly scrub speed off then get off them
Use transmission in lower gears to control downhill speed
Don't ride the brakes......they will overheat, fluid will get hot, glaze the pads, heat crack/warp rotors and braking will fade - K_CharlesExplorerDon't use them as hard.
