Only you can tell how bad the top is damaged and how well it can be repaired. Replacing the entire front cap is a pretty big deal while replacing the bottom is not.
Dollar wise it gets down to if you are happy with this MH and plan on keeping it for a long time. Get a price on replacing the entire front cap and then work with the insurance company on paying more in diminished value on repairing as opposed to replacing the entire front cap. If that puts enough money in your pocket then I'd just repair the top portion and replace the bottom.

Top and bottom are separate pieces. Spider cracks are in top piece below and beside windshield, but don't appear to be into windshield seat.

OP, he fact that you had to strap the left side up and it's a clean break... it looks like the bottom is a separate piece which is joined to the upper 2/3 of the front cap. Is it a separate piece?

Personally, I haven't a clue which way you should go, but I think your decision has to come down to how you feel about the repair facilities. I would investigate the quality of their work, talk to references, etc. Due diligence.

If you have stress cracks high up under the windshield the only way to properly repair is to remove the cap and reinforce the glass from the back side. So one way or another it will require resealing.
If a repair shop tells you the don't need to remove it RUN and don't look back.
Bottom line get a new cap!!!!
A repair will always be a repair.

I wouldn't settle for anything less the a full replacement of the entire cap!!!!You won't get a second chance.

Thanks holstein13 for the links. Impossible to see the spider cracks in the photos. Thank you all for your responses. Insurance aside; I think the proper repair in this instance is to replace the entire cap. As was mentioned, no telling what a couple of years of use might uncover. As for diminished value, I have brought that subject up, as has loss of use for trips I had planned in the Southwest this winter. Mostly it needs to be repaired as close to factory specifications as possible.

In looking at other 08 Discovery 40X it looks like the front cap may be made in three parts... so replacing the entire cap may not be needed. If it's made with a bottom third (below the door that opens), the door and besides the door and up to the top, I'd want a new bottom third as the upper 2/3 is only damaged in a small (easy to fix) area. Even if the front cap is only two pieces I'd still only replace the bottom 1/3 part even if it has to be spliced to the upper 2/3rds so there will not be any sealing problems. This 1/3 and the side parts could probably be found from another wrecked Discovery.
It bothers me that some would sock it to the other guy's insurance which in time will increase all of our insurance costs. That said I would want some diminished value money.

Fiberglass can certainly be properly repaired as Scott has noted. However, if someone hit me as happened to you and their insurance was paying the tab, I'd want everything new.... no question. Sealing the front cap should not be an issue.
