With cruise on and if traffic/conditions allow, I will accelerate as I'm approaching a hill. Then as I start up the hill, I'll remove foot from pedal and let cruise maintain speed. The extra few mph can often build enough momentum that the cruise doesn't downshift. If I'm on a 2 lane back road that is very hilly, I'll just leave cruise off.
