The fact that bypass did not work may mean that the low Freon switch is tripped..You sure you have enough refrigerant in there?...I'd start there and have a leak detector put in with it..If compressor starts working that's it..the next thing which the detector will do is to find the leak...Other possibility is a comp clutch but that probably would have destroyed the belt by now.
