Denver to Utah in January ??

Hi, I am planning to go to Quartz in January and would like to go through Denver towards Utah.

Is it possible, do I need a set of chain?
Is it possible to find a campsite / national Forest or a ski area with camping?
What kind of temps should I expect?

Any advice appreciated

  • As I see it should be ealily doable. If wheather gets bad, I can always wait for a clear sky, I am in no hurry. I think it should be very nice in winter with all the rockies white tops and hope I can find some camping spot while I go through.

I an getting the RV ready for cold temps. I will insulate the basement and get some heat duct going to it just to make sure nothing freeze up while I go up the mountains.
  • I have carried them on a Class 8 truck but never in all my years of driving CO did I ever put them on. CO takes good care of their highways and there are signs that tell you if the chain law is in affect and what "grade" snow chains or snow tires or tires with studs. You can expect any temp you can dream of. 70s to 0. It can snow any month in CO. Yes it's possible. I don't mean to be mean but doesn't make sense for me to plan a trip for you does it? You probably have to call around.

  • BUT if the weather is bad, you can always head South out of Denver to Q via New Mexico. Been there and had to make the route change myself! Only one med high pass at the NM/CO border.

  • Just pick your day(s). There are days or weeks on end of dry, sunny weather in January. It might be cold, but the sun at altitude is so strong, you will hardly feel it.
