January on Utah

Hello, a friend and I are planning a winter trip through the Utah and I am looking for input on RV camping in January. We will be in a 35' pace Arrow towing a jeep. We would like to see Zion Canyon, and Moab/Arches National Park.

Any recommendations, cautions, suggestions?
  • Thanks for the input everyone. With what I learned here I will adjust my trip and use the jeep for day trips into the areas with snow.
  • If the campgrounds in Zion have snow, I would recommend staying in WillowWind RV park in Hurricane. It is about 20 miles west of Zion and the weather is better.
  • RV PARK REVIEWS

Look here and we personally prefer Spanish Trails

The biggest caution is to call ahead and see if the campground is open! We passed through Moab last January and there was only one campground that we could find that was still open. Once that season ends, it's pretty much over!
  • We stayed at Arch View RV Resort Campground. It is the most northerly campground at Moab. We would stay there again if going back.

You really can see The Windows from the campground.

    x2 !

If I recall correctly, Zion is a short drive from Georgetown, UT, so you won't see much of an elevation change.

To reach Moab you will hit several high passes, one going north on the 15 and one going east on the 70. I last went to Moab several years ago for the Easter Jeep Safari (late March) and was very surprised to find and drive through heavy snow at the higher elevations on both freeways. I was not a problem at all, I just slowed down and took it easy. It was daytime, fresh snow and no ice. Would not want to have driven it that night! The fearless and more experienced truckers were whizzing by me going around 70+ !!

It will be cold ! Have fun.
  • Moab is going to be pretty cold in January but doable and enjoyable as long as you are prepared for it. There are multiple nice RV parks although some are closed until mid-March.

I know Portal RV Park is open year round and I believe Spanish Trail and OK Corral are as well. Moab Valley RV Park is not open until March some time.

For visiting Zion NP, the temps will be much more pleasurable in January with an average of highs in the low 50's and lows around freezing. I would recommend Zion River Resort for the stay.

    Mike.

I'm sorry I can't remember the RV Park we stayed at it was about a 1/2 mile south of Moab on the right side of the road very nice view of the Arches N.P. while your in the RV Park. And eating one night at the Brewery (downtown Moab is worth the visit)! Moab is the jeep capital of the world to me especially, Easter Weekend there will be about 30,000 jeeps in Moab for Jeep Week there. Have Fun Rooster
