Desulfating

I'm curious about desulfating my house batteries. I have four 6-volt batteries. To hook up my desulfating charger, should I remove the cables and isolate it from the coach charge system? I was thinking I would hook it up and let it do its thing for a couple of weeks. I think it would be good for them.

I am just assuming that my Freedom SW 2000 inverter/charger does not have a desulfating feature. I do know it has the equalizing feature.
  • Equalizing raises the voltage, so disconnect the house from the batteries when equalizing

The desulfating mode on some chargers ( black n Decker )
Is a pulse cycle at high frequency low amps and normal voltage
No need to disconnect batteries for pulse desufating
  • Yes, some inverter/chargers DO have an equalization mode-- it will likely be manually activated.

It is for a short time ONLY, as it substantially raises voltage.

Absolutely, if you can disconnect house circuits while equalizing, it is best for your 12 VDC PC boards, lights, etc.

The best way to determine that you do need to equalize is to check your wet cell batteries with a battery hydrometer. If readings are not very close to the same (cell to cell) it is time to equalize. Equalization is "finished" when all cells read very close to the same. If this is not achieved within a couple of hours, you have a bad call/battery. Amp rate during equalization is quite low-- under 5 amps.

So, yes, only start equalization on a fully charged battery bank.
  • As I recollect the equalizing mode is for desulfating. Read the inverter manual for more info.

In fact I'm going to be doing that exact same thing in a day or so.
