Profile updated with my vehicles. I will check my fuel filter when I get home to see if it has a drain on it.
Fire up, you mentioned oil changes. Is it true to ONLY put in 19qts and DO NOT go off of the dipstick? Forms I read say that these dip sticks are not calibrated and that over 19qts will rob power.
Ford3316,
First, not all of the filters that either came with or, have been changed to, the "Primary" filter, (the one at the back of the radiator) have a sight bowl and, a drain. You can change to one with it, if you choose. I did. I'll get you the model and part number if you wish.
As for the "19 quart" thing, well, there's a primary reason for the specific amount. And, "robbing power" is not one of them. CAT and or, Freightliner, did some mismarkings on many of the C-7 engine oil dipsticks. There are at least two versions of oil pans for those engines.
One is a 22 Quart pan and, the other is a 19 Quart pan. About 99.99999% of the C-7s come with the 19 quart version, no matter what brand/make/model coach, as long as it's a C-7 CAT. The correct procedure for accurately marking the dip stick, if it hasn't been done already is, the next time you drain your oil, and filter, then install only 19 quarts which, includes any pre-filling of the filter. Some will advocate that, if pre-filling of the filter is done, then fill it using the small circumference holes, not the larger center one.
That is supposedly to insure that the BRAND NEW OIL, is filtered before it gets to the engine. Yeah, I'm sure there's a lot of cr@p in BRAND NEW OIL CONTAINERS, ha ha ha.
Now, once your 19 quarts are installed and you've ran the engine for a few minutes then, shut it down and let it sit for about a 1/2 hour. Then, pull the dip stick, wipe if off, and re-insert it. Let it sit for a few seconds. Then, carefully pull it out again and, note the level.
That level is to be engraved into the face of the dip stick.
Now, the primary reason that 19 AND ONLY 19 quarts are installed is, due to the size of the oil pan, if any more oil is installed, complications will happen that will result in excessive oil mist blow-by exiting from your "Slobber tube" or, otherwise known as the blow-by tube.
When that happens, your toad will have a new oil paint job on it. And, if your blow-by tube has not been extended (either with a factory fix) or with any type of extension that many have use, that excessive oil mist will exit the shorter factory tube and, be deposited on the face(s) of the CAC and the radiator.
When that happens, your radiator alone will cease to be efficient in cooling, especially on any form of grades, even in mildly warmer temps.
So, the point, make sure your only installing 19 quarts of oil during a change to alleviate all these potential issues. Good luck.
