Diesel fuel additives

Being new to having a diesel powered RV, I am uncertain whether you have to add a diesel fuel conditioner with water condenser and biocides when you fuel up.. If so, how often do you have to add it?

  • I ask my diesel mechanic about adding SeaFoam and he said not to add anything. I change all my filters every 4000 to 7000 miles. I don't carry spares but I think I will start doing that next year. I use Shell Rotella oil.
  • Stanadyne is the only thing I will use. Since they also manufacture injection pumps and injectors I think they know what works.
  • "Fuel system manufacturers are concerned that the methods used to reduce sulfur content can also impact fuel lubricity and may cause accelerated fuel system component wear."

  • I use nothing but diesel. I put fuel in that meets the specs in the MB owner's manual which states nothing higher than 5% bio. I change my fuel filters per the service schedule (or more frequent) and carry a spare just in case.

If you store the vehicle for protracted periods of time you may want to use additives specifically for that task.
  • I have an 08 6.4 and I use Schaeffer's Diesel Treat 2000 for increase in cetane ands lubricity, if you plan on a period on non-op then a biocide would be advised.
