Diesel Toad

It is getting time to replace car/toad. I am thinking of a VW diesel. I remember as a kid my dad telling me that city driving with a diesel is not good for a diesel engine. The car will be primarly driven by DW to commute to work and secondary as a toad while traveling. Should I have any concern of the diesel for city driving.

Yes but, city buses are not started, driven 4-5 miles and parked for the day. They are in constant use apd get up to normal operating temps..
Personally, I would go with the shorter oil change intervals. Just in case.
  • The TDI is proven in europe and used everywhere as a city and non city car. Myths based off the late 80's diesels based on todays are just not the case. A friends 2003 TDI has 210k miles on it now, other then maintinence has had no problems and all those miles are spent in stop and go traffic 35 miles each way from their home.

  • It depends.
    How long is the commute?
Diesels, generally speaking, don't much like short trips where they don't get fully warmed up.
If the one-way commute is 5 miles or more, it may not be a problem.
If less than 5 miles, cut the oil change intervals in half, and you should be OK.
